FM unveils Glasgow 2014 Legacy training scheme

Glasgow 2014A thousand new training and volunteering places are to be made available to young unemployed Scots to help them gain valuable employment skills and work experience as part of the 2014 Commonwealth Games Legacy programme.

 Scotland’s Best – backed by £2.4 million from the Scottish Government’s Legacy 2014 Young Person’s Fund – will see 1,000 jobless Scots, aged 16-24, offered a place on a part-time employability programme. Many of the volunteering opportunities will be at sporting and cultural events such as the World Pipe Band Championship, the Gymnastics World Cup and Celtic Connections.

Noise Action Week - time to listenDuring Noise Action Week the council is raising awareness of noise and how everyone can avoid causing neighbourhood problems.

This week the council's Environmental Health officers are urging everyone to consider the impact of noise on their surroundings and how they can help reduce the problem in our communities, especially in residential areas.

Walk Once a WeekPupils across South Lanarkshire are being encouraged to walk to school by taking part in the WoW campaign.

Walk once a Week or Walk on Wednesday encourages children and adults to walk a safe route to school and by reducing the number of children who are always driven to school will increase their level of physical activity.

Funding for community organisations

Funding for community organisationsFamilies across Scotland will benefit from better support services with 45 third sector organisations receiving a funding boost from the Scottish Government.

This £10 million of Strategic Partnership Funding will strengthen the work of young people’s organisations working across Scotland, in areas such as adoption, vulnerable families, child health, literacy, bereavement counselling and parental support.

Over one hundred boys and girls will be heading to East Kilbride over the weekend of 7th to 8th June to participate in the East Kilbride Mod.

This annual gathering, promoting Gaelic culture through poetry and song will take place at Mount Cameron Primary School in the town.

Motorcycle Awareness Campaign, 0700 hours, Friday 17 May to 0700 hours Monday 20 May 2013.

Police ScotlandDuring the weekend’s Motorcycle Awareness Initiative a total of 629 road users were detected for speeding of which 39 were motorcyclists. A further 47 were detected for dangerous or careless driving and 139 were found to be using their vehicles without a valid licence or insurance. There were also 129 offences in relation to the maintenance of vehicles, eight of which were found on motorcycles.

All of these drivers received either a conditional offer of fixed penalty or were reported for summons and some had their vehicles seized.

WWI battlefield schools’ visit funding

WWI battlefield schools’ visit fundingEvery secondary school in Scotland will be offered financial help to carry out educational visits to European battlefields as part of the Scottish Government’s plans to commemorate the centenary of the Great War, First Minister Alex Salmond announced today.

A £2,000 grant will be made available to every senior school in the country to help them meet the costs of trips to Western Front battlefields and war graves so pupils can learn more about the sacrifice made by the many thousands from Scotland and elsewhere during the First World War.

Breast cancer genetic testing

Genetic testing for faulty breast cancer genes is to be extended for women in Scotland.

Clarifying the position in Scotland, Health Secretary Alex Neil said:

"In Scotland, the Scottish Genetics Laboratory Consortium steering group has already decided to extend the testing in line with the new NICE recommendation. This agreement was reached in April this year and will be fully implemented by 1 June.

£5000 for Steelworkers monument

£5000 for Steelworkers monumentThe council has donated £5000 to help create a steelworkers memorial to mark the significant impact of the industry in Scotland.

With so much of South Lanarkshire involved in and affected by the steel industry, from its many steel manufacturing works, to the subsidiary industries which relied heavily on the top quality steel production, South Lanarkshire Council felt it was very important, indeed essential, that they backed the move to create a monument.
