EK Avondale Hockey

EK Avondale HockeyAfter 2 successive defeats, EK Avondale Men's 2nds bounced back with a win in their home game with Ayr at Duncanrig on Saturday. In truth though this was not a totally convincing performance against understrength visitors.

EK took the lead in the opening moments, as Chris Fabian tucked home from close range, and before long the home side were two up, Richard Doherty netting from the top of the circle. The home back line was largely under employed but had to be on their guard to deal with occasional breakaways from Ayr’s pacy forwards. At the other end further goals from Doherty and John Bradley put the home side in a seemingly unassailable position, before Ayr exposed defensive frailties to pull one back.

EK Avondale Hockey

EK Avondale HockeyThree wins from two games is an unlikely statistic, but that it just what EK Avondale achieved last weekend.

An early morning phone call from the students of Glasgow University advised that they couldn't raise a side, and so conceded their game against EK seconds, resulting in a 5-0 win for the local side.
The 1st team then took on Clydeside in a potentially tricky encounter at Duncanrig. With the pace of the visitors always a threat early on, EK had to be on their guard and were indebted to keeper Martin Jackson for two smart stop as visiting forwards raced through on goal.
After weathering this early storm the homesters took the game to Clydeside and found the visiting keeper in fine form, making a number of good saves including one from the top drawer to keep out a Davie Doran effort. EK took the lead just before the break, a mazy dribble from Eddie Liddle saw the ball squared to Euan Sharp to sweep home.
Doran found the net in the second period from close range but a late strike from a Clydeside penalty corner made for a nervous last 15 minutes but EK held on for  fine three points.
On Sunday the increasingly confident 3rds travelled to Hillhead and came away with a fine 4-1 win. In truth EK were rarely troubled at the back and dominated the game for long periods. John Bradley netted two before half time and Phil Lochrin grabbed a third soon after the break. A home goal gave Hillhead hope but EK secured the points with a magnificent sweeping move that climaxed when Adam White slotted the ball confidently away for the team’s fourth.
The mixture of youth and experience is proving a potent one and EK will be confident of continuing their move up the table over the next few weeks.

EK move to top of the league with try bonus win

EK RugbyEK, not having played for five weeks, were clinically efficient in despatching Newton Stewart 27-0 today, with a four try bonus point, which projected them to the top of the league with four matches to go.

Once again, groundsman David Rosie came up trumps with a playable pitch at the Torrance House Arena despite some pretty miserable weather in the last few days. The pitch was always heavy and slippy, but it nevertheless allowed EK to climb to the top of the league.

EK eagles Roller Hockey

All four of the EK Eagles sides travelled to Dundee on Saturday to take on the high flying Ducks, in what proved to be an exciting and controversial series of matches.
There was no hint of what was to follow in the under 10s game, as EK slumped to an 0-11 loss. Despite brave efforts from all the squad, they were simply outclassed by a better side. Conor Gilroy was named EK Man of the Match.

EK Avondale Hockey

With a number of players unavailable and all the sides playing away at the same time, it was always going to be difficult to field a  full complement for all three teams last weekend. That EK Avondale did is a down to the hard work of all three captains, Martin Henry, Geoff Harker and Paul Lochrin and shows just how much strength in depth the club now has.
The first team travelled to high flying Uddingston, and knew they would be in for a tough afternoon. So it proved as the home side put EK under almost constant pressure and notched 5 goals, with only 1 in reply for EK from the hard running Ross Leatham.

Lanarkshire midwives win national award

A team of Lanarkshire midwives have won a national midwifery award.

Jean Watson, Madge Russell, Pauline Creaney, Liz Walker and Michelle Walsh are supervisors of midwives at NHS Lanarkshire. Their project carried out in collaboration with the University of the West of Scotland (UWS), scooped the President’s Award for Midwifery Supervision at the Royal College of Midwives Annual Awards.

EK Eagles Roller Hockey

Whilst the wet weather put paid to many of EK's outdoor sports teams, the players of EK Eagles Roller Hockey Club were able to complete their fixtures against the Glenrothes Grizzlies in the warm and dry of the John Wright Centre on Sunday.

Grizzlies are always tough opponents, with many of their squads also competing at ice hockey, so a difficult afternoon was anticipated, and so it proved.

The under 16s were on first and had the hardest afternoon of all as they crashed to a 0-16 defeat. The visitors scored at regular intervals, despite the brave effort of Ryan Kennay as the EK netminder. Further up the pad Erin Reid and Matthew Sheppard strained every sinew as always but the home side were unable to find a way past the Grizzlies defence. Calum Jarvie was named Man of the Match.

EK Avondale Hockey

With the games for the 2nd and 3rd  teams falling foul of  the weather, it was left to the top side to carry the flag for EK Avondale Men's Hockey Club, as the 1st XI travelled to Edinburgh.

It was the home side that opened brightest and soon took the lead with a scrappy goal that deceived visiting keeper Martin Jackson. This seemed to spur EK on and they soon equalised, Chris Dall finishing well after fine work by Eddie Liddle and Ross Leatham.
