Local MP Michael McCann has vowed to do everything in his powers to fight the so-called Bedroom Tax, which will adversely affect over 1300 families in his constituency.
The MP for East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow fears many of his constituents will face poverty if the Welfare Reform Bill goes through without amendments on Wednesday.
While agreeing in principle that tougher action against those who simply refuse to work under any circumstances is required, he believes this piece of legislation will unfairly attack ordinary people who find themselves on benefits through no fault of their own.
“It’s typical of the Tories to go for the jugular against people who have few means of adequately defending themselves,” he said.
“There is a strong case for welfare reform. However, these particular reforms are not the answer. The Bedroom Tax could rob many families of not just money, but their dignity as well. Just how cruel and oppressive can a Government be? Imagine being forced to pay over £400 a year, money you don’t have because you’re already unemployed, just for the privilege of staying in your own home.
"The Tories are saying if you have an unused bedroom in your council house you’ll have to lose £12 a week from your benefits payment. There are 1373 low income households in our constituency who would be affected this way.
"There are three major problems with the Bedroom Tax. There aren’t enough smaller houses to go round so families will be forced to stay put. There aren’t enough jobs available for those who want to escape life on benefits. And those who will be forced to pay this terrible tax if it is voted through just don’t have the money to do so. That’s why I and all clear-thinking, fair-minded MPs will oppose it.”
