Welcoming today’s Court of Session ruling in favour of minimum unit pricing for alcohol, Health Secretary Alex Neil said:
“We welcome today’s favourable opinion from the Court of Session on minimum unit pricing of alcohol. We have always believed minimum unit pricing is the right thing to do to tackle Scotland’s problematic relationship with alcohol. Minimum unit pricing will target cheap alcohol relative to strength that is favoured by hazardous and harmful drinkers and which contributes to much of the alcohol-related harm we see in Scotland.

New medicines review published

An independent review of the current systems for making new medicines available across NHS Scotland has been published today.
The review considered every aspect of the introduction of new medicines from national advice to local decision-making to establish whether any improvements can be made. The recommendations include:

More public involvement in the assessment of new medicines and local Health Board consideration of individual requests for drugs not routinely available;

Task force sets out action plan

Four draft themes have been discussed and developed, which are:

Move To Single Police Service To Provide Greater Focus On Equality

New Scheme for Children in Hospital

Young people ready for work

Scottish business is backing a new employer assessed work-based qualification to help young people prove they are ready for employment.
The Certificate of Work Readiness has been developed in partnership with the business community and aims to give unemployed young people the chance to demonstrate the value they bring to the workplace.
Piloted by Skills Development Scotland (SDS) in a number of areas, the certificate will consist of college-based learning time, as well as 190 hours of real life work experience, and is unique in that it will only be awarded following employer assessment.
Cancer will affect two in five people

Two in five people in Scotland will be diagnosed with some form of cancer during their lifetime, according to figures released yesterday, but people are living longer after diagnosis.
Official statistics released by ISD Scotland also show that incidence rates of cancer in Scotland have increased by three per cent over the last ten years.
