Lynn LawrieA Hairmyres Hospital nurse has praised NHS Lanarkshire’s Community Traumatic Brain Injury Team (CTBIT) after it helped her recover from a horrific car accident.

Tobacco ban comes into forceThe ban on open display of tobacco products in large shops and sales from self-service tobacco vending machines comes into effect today.

The changes are part of a range of measures to improve health by reducing the number of people choosing to smoke, and comes into force a month after the launch of the Scottish Government Tobacco Control Strategy.

EK/Avondale Hockey - 27th April

With the 2nd XI having finished their league campaign, EK/Avondale Hockey Club 1sts were able to call upon a number of that side to bolster their own depleted numbers at home to Glasgow University on Saturday.


The revamped homesters opened brightly against the students but were dealt a major blow when stalwart defender Colin Ballantyne was forced off, and taken up to Hairmyres A&E after taking a ball to the face. The revamped back line held firm against the visitors, with keeper Martin Jackson rarely troubled. It was something of a surprise when the students took the lead midway through the half.

Missing Man in East Kilbride

Missing Man East KilbridePolice Scotland officers in East Kilbride are appealing for the assistance of the media and the public in an effort to trace a 26 year-old man who has been reported missing from his home.

Adam Maxwell (26) of Carnegie Place, East Kilbride was last seen at East Kilbride Shopping Centre by a family member around 11am yesterday, Thursday 25 April 2013.

He is described as around 5ft 10 inches in height and of medium build with short brown hair. When he was last seen he was wearing flower patterned shorts, a grey hooded top and black boots.

High reading and writing levels for pupils

Under Curriculum for Excellence, more than 90 per cent of pupils are within or above expected reading and writing levels Learning Minister Alasdair Allan said yesterday.

The first ever literacy results from the Scottish Survey of Literacy and Numeracy have been published today; the survey assessed pupils in primary four, primary seven and second year of high school in reading, writing and listening and talking. It shows:

  • More than 90 per cent of pupils at all stages are working within or above the expected level for reading
  • More than 90 per cent of pupils are working within or above the expected levels for writing
  • For listening and talking, more than 80 per cent of all pupils are working within or above the expected levels.
